Today we had a "boutique field" of competitors take part in the last race for 2009 on one of the easiest stretches of water we have in Wellington, the very scenic Motorway Course. Sticking with the short courses, the 6 km run down the Motorway, even with only 14 paddlers it always gives us our best crowd of spectators with just over 5,000 people having the pleasure of viewing us out on the water as they drive up and down the Motorway. :-)
Anyhow it was a fantastic day out there with the wind dropping about 70kph from last night so we just had a 40kph (gentle zephyr) a fine day and a flat pitch to paddle on. The Multisport kayaks were able to join us today due to the shoreline course (and no white caps) and they made the most of the flat conditions to set the pace of the race early on.
The Waka Ama Boys who always support our races better than anyone, again out numbered the Surf ski and Kayak paddlers and they always push hard to chase down anyone with a double paddle ahead of them.
Thanks to the 90 plus paddlers who have supported the six pre Christmas races and we look forward to seeing you in 2010 with the first race kicking off at Hataitai Beach on January 10.
Also thanks to the Wellington Regional Council for keeping an eye on us, Hoe Tonga (Wgtn Regional Waka Ama Group) Shane Ross, who runs the Wellington Tuesday Night Kayak Series, Steve Knowles at Sportzhub and to Sharlene who does the Lions share of the work at each race while I swann around out on the water.

Surf ski demo day and 2010 Series dates
Well the demo session went well last night even though it was quite coolish and blustery.
Big thanks to Ian Ferguson for taking time from his busy schedule to come down and see what we're all doing down this way. We extended the invitation for Ian to come down to work on the demo day which he agreed to do, which was good as he has a good variety of surf skis and of course he was more than happy to join in and do the race, which is run every Tuesday evening by Shane Ross.
Thanks to Shane again for also allowing us to work our demo sessions around his Twilight race http://www.betterthantv.co.nz/
Thanks also to the Fergs Wellington staff, Rob Anear and Hans Wannemacher for assisting Ian and also joining us all out on the water for the race.
The numbers usually fall when the conditions were like they were last night, (though the wind did settle down for the race pretty much) but I'm sure, with Ian Ferguson being out on the water everyone was keen to see how they'd match up against him.............that was nothing, you wait and see what he can do when he does some training!
There is an article on Sportzhub from last nights demo and racing http://www.sportzhub.com/ photos from last night should make it onto our website tonight.
If anyone missed the chance to demo the surf skis, or it was a bit cold last night to try one, just go down to Fergs Wellington on a nice warm calmish day (we get them at least once a week at the moment) and see Dave, Hans or Mike they will help you out.
Below are the remaining races for the 2010 Wellington Series:
Jan 10 Hataitai Beach (7 km)
Jan 31 Ngatitoa Domain (7 km)
Feb 21 Petone Foreshore (Tory St) (8 km around Matiu Is)
Mar 14 Shelley Bay (10km Seatoun course)
Apr 4 Petone (Wellington Waterski Club (13km motorway course)
Apr 25 Ngatitoa Domain (15km ) plus short course option
The races are every 3 weeks as you can see and the distances build up to the Matariki race (15km to 20km) which should be at the end of May/early June 2010.
Also don't forget to check out the other big events on the http://www.surfski.co.nz/ and http://www.wakaama.co.nz/ calendars

Race 5, November 29, 2009 at Onepoto
A slight change of venue and course on Sunday still threw out a few challenges for paddlers.Due to a very strong North Westerly wind steaming down through the channel at Ngatitoa domain we opted early to locate our start around to the Rowing, Kayaking and Waka Clubs bases at Onepoto.
The course went from the jetty and around past Te Onepoto Bay through the Yacht moorings by the shoreline then around "the tyre" back to the start finish making up a 2 lap course of 7.3km. Considering the conditions were quite blustery we were pleased with the turn out..............traditionally these types of races attract more competitors when the weather and conditions are warm with not too much wind around the same practice applies to the turnout with Wellingtons Tuesday night twilight kayak Series.
The next outing we have organised is a surf ski Demo Day, which is on December 8 and runs around Wellingtons weekly Tuesday twilight kayak Series www.betterthantv.co.nz which is run by Shane Ross you can find info on the demo day on www.surfskiandwakaama.blogspot.com
The next race of the Series is Sunday December 20 and the venue is Wellington Waterski Club by the Motorway at Petone. The course will be 7 km and will be an out and back (1 lap) along the Motorway. It's one of the most sheltered courses in Wellington especially in the worst of the Northery and North Westerly winds.
The schedule for the races in 2010 are in draft form currently and will be published by the second week of December. At this stage the format will have a race in the first week of January running through to late April the races will start off at 7 kms and slowly extend a few kms each race up to 15km to assist paddlers building up to the Wellington Matariki race late May early June. The schedule also works around the major races on both the NZ Surf ski Racing and NZ Waka Ama calendar.
We have a whole bunch of photos, from both on and off the water which are now on the website: www.surfskiandwakaama.blogspot.com Don't forget you can download the photos of yourself:

Race this Sunday November 29
I went out to Porirua on Friday to check out a good configuration for the Harbour /Estuary course I promised you all at the last race.
Here's what I've come up with:
From Ngatitoa Domain start head south down the Porirua Harbour to the line of yacht moorings turn clockwise around the last pole by the shoreline before Te Onepoto Bay, head North up the harbour then go under the SH1 bridge at Mana, head around to Browns Bay and turn around the largest yellow buoy, then head back under the SH1 bridge again, then around the corner to the finish at Ngatitoa Domain.
The distance should be just under 7km.
I've taken this race off the open water to mix the conditions up a bit up, so it may be a bit flatter than some of the others we've done but then again if it's like it was on Friday there will be quite a few waves to surf if we have North Westerly winds.
It's reasonably sheltered and close to shore so I've extended an invitation to some of the K1 and multisport paddlers.............whether or not they make it along..............

Race 3 Sunday November 8
Hi All,
Here's a brief from Race 3 which I've sent into http://www.sportzhub.com/
Race 3 of the Wellington Surf Ski and Waka Ama had the big thumbs up from the weather Gods after the cancellation of Race 2, three weeks ago. Forty four paddlers were greeted by a light to moderate southerly for the 8.2km race from Petone and around Matiu Island (Somes) and return.
Today it was pleasing to see the number of Surf ski paddlers has increased out there, so the Waka Ama paddlers may get out numbered if this trend continues.
It is always good to see people travelling to our races and today having people come over from the Wairarapa and also Levin and Otaki is good for us and in turn the paddlers reciprocate and travel to their areas and further a field when races are on as well.
Special mentions today to Grant Barriball, Jorn Scherzer and Paddy Rimene who had a good race finishing close together over todays course. Wellingtons newest Waka Ama Club Hokoikoi for taking out the first 3 placings in the W6.
Mike Tait from Levin headed the Surf ski field again this week, he also won the surf ski class in last weekends 4 bridges River race in Wanganui as well. Sandy Winterton, who in the past has paddled in the Sea Kayaks class, has taken quite quickly to getting his Fenn XT moving along and is now looking more than competitive.
After the paddling was over 19 spot prizes were dished out with some lucky enough to get something more than just a sore body from the days outing.
Also thanks to Rob Taggart for taking the photos for this race.
The races are every 3 weeks, the next one being on Sunday November 29, the venue is Ngatitoa Domain, Mana.
Todays results:
W6: Holdens Hikoikoi crew 45:16,1; Katies Hokoikoi crew 46:11,2; Kiris Hokoikoi crew 53:06, 3; Kokiri Chicks 54:54

W1 Women: Anita Taggart 52:49,1.
